Over the past few years, we have seen several very high-profile female celebrities come out and talk about their struggle with Endometriosis. Prior to this exposure, and despite being quite common, it was a topic relatively unspoken about.
The reality is, Endometriosis affects over one million Australian females on some level, and at some point in their lives. It’s notoriously hard to diagnose, with varied symptoms across individuals, which in some cases, are like those of other diseases. In general, diagnosis is only possible through minor surgery, often one of the last steps in the process, which has taken the average diagnosis to a time frame of 7-12 years. *
In the meantime, the burden of Endometriosis can be heavy.
This is something close to my heart, after seeing a family member suffer through many years of an extreme case of “Endo”. Endless fatigue, enduring and debilitating pain, multiple surgeries, all reducing their quality of life and affecting their overall wellness. Thankfully things have improved for them, but it was not without sacrifice and struggle.
We continue to hear more and more stories about “Endo” and it is likely to take a front seat as March marks Endometriosis Awareness Month. “March into Yellow” is a great way to increase awareness and raise funds for ongoing research, support and education. You are likely to know someone who has “Endo” or you might be battling it yourself, so get around this great cause with a “Yellow” day, week or month at your place of business.
If yellow isn’t your color, then you might like to support Epilepsy Awareness Month, also taking place in March, with the “Make March Purple” campaign. You are encouraged to be a “purple hero”, with funds raised going towards essential supports, education and training, research for treatments and hopefully one day a cure.
The World’s Greatest Shave is also on this month, this is a very popular and fun way to raise funds for Blood Cancer research. If you are shaving, cutting or coloring your hair this year, you are amazing and we wish you all the very best!
March marks the start of Autumn and cooler months ahead, which also brings an increased presence of colds and flus. Your best defense is to stay up to date with vaccines, wear a mask in crowded places, wash/sanitize your hands regularly and if you are unwell, stay home as much as possible so as not to infect others. Your GP can assist you with any specific concerns or questions you might have.
