Your Health This Month

“Live in the sunshine; swim in the sea; drink in the wild air”

  • Ralph Waldo Emerson

Summer is finally here! Christmas is just around the corner and the scent of a New Year is in the air! The Sun gets up early and stays up late; we all come out of the “hibernation” of the cold, to enjoy the warmth of the next few months! The pool gets a clean; the covers come off barbeques; thongs, shorts and singlets take over the wardrobe and dust gets blown off the backyard cricket set. And let’s not forget that here in Geelong, we have the best of town, country and surf, right at our doorstep! It’s so great to get out and enjoy it!
Just as important as enjoying yourself, is to look after yourself. Issues like Thunderstorm Asthma, hay fever and summer colds can become prevalent at this time – as we see each other, we can also share more bugs with each other. Wildlife such as snakes, spiders and stinging insects are also out enjoying the sunshine and warm weather. It’s important to ensure that you are aware and prepared if these things might affect you. Talk to your GP if you need to update, renew or want more information on your Summer health needs.

One of the most important messages around health in Summer, especially in Australia, is to look after your skin. Over 95% of the most deadly form of Skin Cancer – Melanomas – are caused by exposure to UV radiation (Cancer Council, Australia). While you can still be exposed in the cooler months, Australians spend more time in the sun, in Summer, which marks a timely reminder to protect your skin. You can read more about Sun Safety at the Cancer Council website.
If you notice any changes in existing moles or freckles, or new spots on your body, book a skin check with your GP as soon as possible – early detection gives you the best chance of successful treatment.

The festive season can also be a very hard and lonely time for some. There are many appeals to help those in need – if you can, please donate to give others a smile this Christmas, and/or check in on those around you that might live alone or not have family/friends close. After all, the best times are shared times!
Wishing you and your family the most wonderful festive period and a safe, happy and healthy 2025!
Stay Well,
