Valerie returns to health after medical mystery

A medical mystery consumed Valerie’s life for more than a year.

Valerie had a mild stroke which caused internal bleeding. The bleeding meant she needed additional blood every three weeks, causing anxiety and strain on her supportive family.

“They didn’t know where the bleeding was coming from,” Valerie said.

“The doctor said all they can do is put the camera down that takes photos and my son Andrew said ‘well that’s got to happen, we have to find where she’s bleeding’.

“They did that and they knew straight away – I would say within seconds they knew where the problem was. Thirteen months it took them to fix it, only this last year have they cleared me.”

Valerie’s health has improved after the stroke five years ago, but with her husband in care, she realised she needed additional help at home.

genU’s Home Care Packages (HCP) team helped Valerie connect with Government-funded assistance for everyday activities like cleaning, personal care, gardening and meal services.

“What I like about it is you’ve got contact with someone. If I had a fall, because I’ve had a few falls, you’ve got contact with somebody just about every day really,” Valerie said.
