This Month At Geelong Gallery
This Spring, Geelong Gallery presents two prize exhibitions that celebrate the best in contemporary Australian painting, craft and design.
The Gallery’s 2024 Geelong Contemporary Art Prize is an acquisitive award for contemporary painting. The thirty-one works presented this year were selected from an Australia-wide field of 560 entries. In representing some of the country’s finest established and emerging artists, this exhibition provides a particular survey of current approaches to subject matter, genres, and stylistic diversity.
The second prize exhibition presented at Geelong Gallery is an initiative of the Australian Design Centre, MAKE AWARD: Biennial Prize for Innovation in Australian Craft and Design. This major new award celebrates innovation in contemporary craft and design through the work of 30 finalists, drawn from over 180 entries across the fields of ceramics, glass, furniture, metal, jewellery, textiles and fibre. The finalists demonstrated a high level of skill either working with materials that are new to their practice, new or traditional materials, or working in new and innovative ways.
From a painting prize with a decade’s long history to one of the newest open to creatives and across their distinctive mediums, these two award exhibitions showcase the strength and diversity of contemporary practice in Australia.
