We recently spent some time with owners Wayne and Teresa, chatting about their humble beginnings at the estate, as we soaked up the rustic charm and cosy ambiance that they so beautifully provide.
August this year marks their 10 year anniversary as proud, hard working owners, who took on what was a very daunting project, and turned it into what we see today as one of Geelong’s top tourism destinations.
With strong catering backgrounds, they were on the lookout for a unique property, with the intention of creating a classic wedding and function venue. It was during their search that they unexpectedly came across Barrabool Estate, a location that wasn’t really like anything they had seen before, and one that they knew with great planning, hard work and elbow grease, they could turn into an exclusive and stunning space.
After careful consideration, discussions with their designer and permit conflicts, they went from wanting to manage it solely as a wedding venue, to creating a stand alone tourism destination that was perfect for people of all ages and from all walks of life.
When they first took over in 2015, the maze itself was an overgrown jungle. In order for them to clean it up, they had to quite literally crawl underneath to find the centre and work their way outwards, to try and find the best way to tackle it. Rather than hiring expensive contractors and outsourcing all of the work, Wayne and Teresa wanted to put the hard work in themselves, knowing just how rewarding all of that effort would be.
What they thought may take 6 months of clean up, ultimately took them 3 years, as they needed to not only renovate, they also had to seek permits, install water tanks, solar panels and septic tanks, also giving them the added benefit of being very self sufficient and semi off grid.They also live on the property, and expressed just how much they love and appreciate the serenity of the lifestyle they have created for themselves and the beauty of what they have created for others.
What you experience when you arrive at the estate is a sight that must be seen to be believed, with character, charm and a vibrant energy that is like nothing else.
On the property you will find 5 acres of lush gardens, beautiful wildlife, quirky and unique decor inside and out, 3 stunning air bnb guest houses, and their fully licensed country style Duck Duck Goose cafe, which caters beautifully to small and large groups. Weddings and functions remain one of their most popular attractions, as there is just so much on offer. They pride themselves on providing full experience packages to their guests, with two romantic ceremony spaces to choose from, a stunning reception venue that caters for up to 150 guests, gorgeous photography backdrops, catering, guest accommodation and even floristry, making them an incredibly popular choice for couples.
