Geelong
Geelong is 65km from Melbourne across Port Phillip Bay and 75km via freeway from the State capital. Geelong's city centre is bounded by La Trobe Terrace, Corio Bay, Eastern Park and a railway line in the south.
Victoria's second-largest city has one of the country's most dynamic city centres. The Waterfront - one of the few facing north in Victoria - has an exciting array of restaurants, bars and attractions, from Cunningham Pier, past the Royal Geelong
Yacht Club to Eastern Beach.
The Waterfront has undergone a $170 million redevelopment over the past five years. The landscaped foreshore contains several restored historic buildings. An historic woolstores building contains a Deakin University campus and a world-class concert stage, Costa Hall. Eastern Beach features jetties, a famous art-deco swimming pools complex - now restored - parklands, and a world-class restaurant.
Smaller reserves and parks dot the foreshore and inner city Geelong. Johnstone Park is home to the town hall, library and the impressive Geelong Art Gallery. Geelong's commercial and retail centre radiates out from Moorabool Street, the backbone of the town's 1838 survey. The western end of Little Malop Street is the city's cultural precinct, with fine cafes, studios, and art galleries all within walking distance of the Geelong Performing Arts Centre and the Court House Youth Arts Complex.

Barwon Water – Daylight Saving Restrictions
Stage 4 water restrictions will remain in place over summer because of the continuing drought.
The restrictions, known as Stage 4 Daylight Saving, will allow some community exemptions similar to last summer. They include minimal garden watering and an allocation to community sports grounds to ensure many sports can continue over summer.
Other restrictions under Stage 4 restrictions, which were introduced in December, 2006, remain.
Barwon Water Chairman Roger Lowrey said despite declining storage levels, some Daylight Saving exemptions were possible without jeopardising Geelong’s supplies.
“With storage levels slightly below this time last year, we have taken a cautious yet prudent management approach. In doing so, the Board has considered supply and demand modeling, projections on storage levels and weather patterns and community feedback.”
The new restriction regime began on November 1 2008,
and end on April 5 2009, in line with Daylight Saving.
Under the new rules:
• Residential customers, including permanent caravan park residents, can use a hand-held hose fitted with a trigger nozzle for watering garden beds and trees between 7 and 8pm twice weekly. Only one hose per property is allowed. Watering will operate on odd and even house numbers.
• 500 million litres have been allocated to public recreational facilities, with the allocation to be managed by councils and sporting groups.
• newly laid drought-tolerant turf may be watered initially for three weeks using a hand-held hose fitted with a trigger nozzle except between the peak hot weather period of Christmas and Australia Day. A Water Conservation Plan is required and a watering program recommended by an approved supplier must be followed.
• Existing swimming pools can be topped up using a hand-held hose fitted with a trigger nozzle during designated garden watering times. Owners must have a pool blanket to reduce evaporation as part of an approved Water Conservation Plan.
• Car wash operators may continue to operate subject to a Water Conservation Plan.
The additional water for sports grounds will allow about one in four to be maintained for sport. Active playing surfaces, such as bowling and golf greens and turf wickets, also are eligible.
Individual exemptions on the grounds of age, disability or rehabilitation will continue to be considered case-by-case.
Mr Lowrey said storages and consumption would continue to be closely monitored to ensure restrictions matched prevailing circumstances.
“Regardless, consumers are urged to continue to save water. Conservation is the most important things we can do to protect supplies during drought,” he said.
Barwon Water’s Board will review the new restrictions before the end of Daylight Saving.
Full details of the Stage 4 Daylight Saving restrictions are available on Barwon Water’s website www.barwonwater.vic.gov.au and will be advertised in the regional media. Customers can also call the water restrictions Hotline on
1300 656 007.
